David Sharpe
A Retrospective
David Sharpe was an artist who left a Lasting Impression on all who were able to see his work. A great admirer of the Group of Seven he travelled north to capture, painting in plein-air, some of the same landscapes that inspired them but he was also able to find inspiration in the countryside around Perth County and the foothills of Alberta. He considered himself a Contemporary Impressionist painter but he was also a painter that was deeply influenced by the American Tonalists of the late 1800s and was the only Canadian member of the current American Tonalist society. He said about his work:
"There's no big complicated 'idea' behind it. It's just all about the light. Seeing it, feeling it and trying to capture it as I see it around me. Compositions with a simple strong design that capture a 'sense of place' also attract me. If my work strikes the same visual and emotional chord in a viewer that it did in me when I painted it, if it can make that viewer feel real emotion then I've succeeded as a painter."
We are fortunate to have a number of David's landscapes to present in a retrospective show, Lasting Impressions, that we welcome you to view online or in the gallery and purchase if you so choose. Many are impressionistic, many lean toward abstraction and many are tonalist. Some are plein-air panels and many have been done in the studio. In all of them you will see the light, the strong sense of place and the emotion.
