We are very excited to be showing the works of David Sharpe, a Stratford Plein Air artist who has been painting seriously for over ten years. David recently left an advertising career in Toronto to move to Stratford and pursue painting full time. The landscapes in and around Stratford and South Western Ontario provide him with a wealth of material for his oils on panel and canvas. Shown here are two works currently for sale in the store. We have some beautiful new pottery by Gabrielle Kaufman, from Etobicoke, Ontario. Gabrielle works in dark greens and blacks and blues and reds with abstracted leaf and design patterns often inspired by the ravine landscape behind her house. She is also influenced by other artists and designers. The dark green bowl shown here was inspired by a William Morris wallpaper pattern. We are pleased to now have lots of mugs and bowls in a variety of sizes in stock. Fifty percent of all Gabrielle's pottery proceeds are donated to Canadian Food for Children. What a perfect Christmas gift for a pottery lover on your list.

John and Deb Sturrock, of JD Leather in Waterloo, have been making quality leather bags for over thirty years and Village Studios has been carrying them for that long. Each bag is hand sewn using high quality upholstery leather. Recently they have added a small and large version flat bag to their design collection. The zip pocket at the front of the purse is divided in half, with each half being large enough to hold a passport or other travel documents. As with all JD bags the inside has lots of zippered compartments. The large market bag, shown here in an acid yellow, is perfect for shopping or for travel and is also available in black and dark grey.

We have just received some new work from Amelia Lucier and Julien Mongeau of AJ Glass and Ceramics, Montreal. We again have their fantastic glass and ceramic mortar and pestles and the newest addition, a glass and ceramic citrus juicer. We also have new oil drizzlers and wonderful espresso cups and saucers in two different sizes. By making functional objects decorative this creative team are able to bring beauty to the workspace and table.

We have some beautiful new work by Collingwood, Ontario jeweller, Elaine Wigle. Elaine designs all her own work using unique stones and pearls, accented with handmade components in sterling silver and gold. Each piece is a wearable work of art. The first piece is a large white and grey pearl pendant on an 18" knotted grey pearl necklace. The second piece is an ammonite fossil pendant on brown pearls. Each necklace can be worn as shown or the pendant can be removed so that the pearls can be worn seperately and the pendant can be combined with a sterling chain. The earrings are sterling silver and sterling silver with white pearls.

Ivan Golletz is one of Village Studios newest artisans. Shown here is Ivan's replica of a Steam Crank Slider Mechanism. The different woods Ivan has used make it an interesting table or desk piece on its own but by simply turning the handle, either way (which makes the crank move backwards and forwards), it becomes a fully working piece of art. The original mechanism would have been massively built in cast iron but this wonderful small wood version is sure to appeal to anyone with an interest in mechanics.

For many years Sarah Reesor has been known for her whimsical pins of birds, animals, angels and fish. This summer Sarah decided that she needed to explore other artistic pursuits and we are thrilled to have just received some of her new work. Each small square canvas has been worked "..... using a mixed media approach- many layers of paint, pen, pencil, pastel, charcoal, crayon, carbon paper, ink and so forth - this in combination with some fabric embedded into the layers ..... and a lot of gel medium which I think is what sometimes makes for the feeling of encaustic." There is of course still a whimsical side to the work, with little chairs and flowers floating in the landscapes each occupied with at least one large creature, reminiscent of those pins that made so many people smile for so many years.

AJ Glass & Ceramics are created by Amelie Lucier and Julian Mongeau. These beautiful, plain white bowls with fine stripe lines are by Amelie. The large bowl is approximately 7 1/2" in diameter and the small ones are about 4 1/2" in diameter each. Functional but also beautiful to look at they reflect all of the work by the two artists. The whimsical jewellery of Sylvie Lupien is made using sterling silver and coloured cement. Sylvie is from Montreal and has been creating jewellery for more than twenty years. I met Marie-France Duval in an artist co-op in Quebec City several years ago. I loved her hand woven jewellery made out of stainless steel wire, crystals and some semi-precious stones. Marie-France uses traditional weaving techniques to create each piece. Marie-France's Tisse Urbain is "inspired by the richness of traditional weaving and contemporary materials." Casein is a milk based paint, a very old medium pre dating oil paint. The Pomegranate painting is done in acrylic on canvas. Toronto artist Lynn Jackson uses childhood memories and textile techniques taught to her years ago by her mother to create unique metal wire sculptures. Lynn knits copper wire to create birthday dresses and night gowns which she then shadowbox frames. She also creates other childhood clothing and toys which she hangs, often in groups. Shown here is one of the four framed dresses we have in the store and one of Lynn's 'stuffed toys', a rabbit with wonderful floppy ears. Glenn Elliott's House of Cards

Local sculptor, Glenn Elliott, has turned his hand to the card table and has created a deck of oversized playing cards out of mild steel with picture overlays. Using very small earth magnets the cards can be assembled into a variety of sculptural works based on traditional House of Cards patterns. The pictures above show some of the designs Glenn has created but the possibilities are endless. You can create your own House of Cards sculptures at home using the steel deck of cards, supplied earth magnets and hinges and a helpful book with a number of patterns. It is a perfect interactive art work!

Thomas Aitken and Kate Hyde, both talented craftspeple and artists on their own, have recently started to collaborate on a series of objects that bring together Thomas's strong skills as a potter and Kate's interest in surface decoration. Susan Benson, a well known artist and theatre designer, has been working on mixed media paintings of characters from plays by William Shakespeare. Her vast knowledge of the plays, her experience as a costume and set designer and her talent as an artist make these theatre images truly unique works of art. The images shown here are from Shakespeare's play The Merry Wives of Windsor. The first image is Mistress Quickly, the second is Nym, Bardolph and Pistol and the last image is Falstaff.

Elaine Wigle is a talented jewellery designer from Collingwood, Ontario. Elaine has a degree in Fine Arts from York University and began making jewellery in 1986. She has won several awards for her Art Jewellery pieces. Glenn Elliott is a Stratford artist who works in many mediums but his work with metal and stainless steel is shown here. Recently Glenn produced a number of pieces he calls 3D Tattoos. They are based on Sailor Jerry Tattoos from the 30s and 40s and they are unique works of mixed media art, including kitchen utensils, created for the wall, not the body.

This functional line of pottery is made by Jay Burn, a Stratford potter who has been creating this pastel pottery highlighted by line drawings of fish for a number of years. Alan Johnson Watercolours

Alan Johnson likes to paint places in Stratford that visitors to town don't often see. Many of Alan's watercolours are studies of the buildings of the Cooper Site which once housed the CNR Repair Shops or of other small factories in the city that are no longer used for their original purpose. Often weeds and scrub brush have taken over the parking lots and surround the buildings. It is the less scenic part of the city and yet Alan's paintings are beautifully done renderings of what were once important buildings in a young community.

A Donation

This year we asked Leslie Watts to do a painting for our donation to the Stratford Chef School auction. The painting, Still Life With Gin And Pears, is acrylic on 10 x 12 birch panel and we have framed it (not shown) in a black shadowbox frame without glass. We are very pleased with the finished framed work and we hope that The Chef School has a successful auction. Many thanks to Leslie for her part of the donation.

Quill Boxes

Porcupine Quill Boxes

It takes a craft person two days to make one three inch quill box, not including the preparation of materials. All the materials are natural except for the thread and dye. The white quills are their natural colour and the base is birch bark carefully removed from the tree without damaging the tree. Each basket is trimmed with sweetgrass, harvested in July. The designs on the lids of the quill box reflect the skill of the craft person, the more intricate and dramatic designs usually having been done by a an older craftsperson with years of practice. These baskets are from the Parry Sound area in Ontario.

We've Got Scarves!

We are pleased to have a new selection of scarves in the store. Susie Arnold has created her scarves from large pieces of raw silk which she hand paints in deep rich colours highlighted with an abstracted pattern.

Each of Corrine Prince Kaufman's scarves are hand-dyed and hand-woven using a variety of fibres. In the picture above she has used ( left to right ) Silk, cotton & bamboo: Silk & cotton and Silk & wool. Each scarf is intricately woven, one colour flowing effortlessly into the next.

Here are Toni's purses and like her pillow shams they are all made out of high quality designer fabric each one a little work of art. Leslie Watts is an artist from Stratford that we have been representing for a number of years. 'Beech Tree', the work seen here, is an acrylic on canvas painting of a beech tree Leslie saw in the garden of Gilbert White's House in Selbourne, Hampshire while travelling in the UK several years ago. The Orchid and Lace design necklaces shown here are by Stephanie Lapierre, a Montreal jeweller. We have carried Stephanie's work for several years now and it continues to be very popular. Her more elaborate designs are fabulous with evening wear and work well with prom and bridal gowns. Her simpler pieces can be worn with sweaters, suits and even blue jeans and a tee shirt.

We have just received a number of new pieces by Toronto potter, Gabrielle Kaufman. Gabrielle has introduced a new black pattern to her line and we think that it will prove to be as popular as her well known pottery with it's red highlights. Fifty percent of all Gabrielle's pottery sales are donated to Canadian Food for Children.

Danielle O'Connor is a young award winning jewellery designer that Village Studios has been carrying for a number of years. Customers will be familiar with her very popular line of bracelets made from old silverware that Danielle began making and selling before she went to Georgian College to get her formal training. We still carry her silverware pieces but we also have a number of her necklaces, bracelets and earrings in sterling silver with crystals and semi- precious stones. Susan Benson

Stratford artist and theatre designer, Susan Benson has done some wonderful small mixed media drawings on gesso board this spring. Each piece is a character from a Shakespearean play and reflects Susan's talent as both portrait artist and costumer designer. Lori Skinner

Lori Skinner has been carving birds and fish for many years and her work can be seen in collector's homes, cottages and gardens in many parts of Canada and the United States. Last year Lori decided to try something a little different. Lori's new work takes it's cue from the folk art tradition of wood doll heads. Her whimsical women's heads document hairstyles through the ages, each one with a personality of its own. Each head measures approximately 7 1/2" tall and stands on a black base. Jennifer Graham is a talented ceramic artist from Stratford. Jennifer's black and white gravity bowls and hand built glasses and vases are embossed using textile elements to create contemporary design pieces. Glenn Elliott is a local artist who works in a variety of mediums. This sculpture, titled 'Kneeling Man', is a smoke fired ceramic work and it is 18" high x 16" wide. Recently Glenn has been working on his ' Tattoo Series', wall sculptures based on tattoos from the thirties and forties. This incredible Maple Burl bowl was turned by Maynard Bauman from St. Jacobs, Ontario. We carry a number of Maynard's bowls in a variety of sizes and woods. This bowl is a low flat bowl roughly measuring 12 x 17 1/2 inches.

Paul Gray Diamond from Coboconk, Ontario produces finely turned wooden vases using Blackwood for the necks and a variety of Canadian and imported woods for the bases. The vases pictured here stand 5 to 8 inches tall.
